Jane Campion is my idol. After anticipating this film for months it did not fail to meet my high expectations, with cinematography so stunning I had to constantly withstrain my audible gasps. And I think the actor Ben Whishaw, who plays Keats, is amazingly attractive.

Every now and then I go to see a standard Hollywood movie. One with a linear narrative, big name actors, a plotline involving romance, little one liner jokes... you know the deal. Most of the films I normally choose to watch are more Arthouse-y, so I convinced myself that maybe something simple would make a nice change. How wrong I was.

I went to see Valentines Day (a) because of the cast and (b) because it sounded like Love Actually, and I always enjoy that movie. What a waste of my life. Mental note #1 - never again go alone to see a movie all about love. My friend cancelled, so I ended up being by myself in an entire cinema full of couples. The worst part however, was Taylor Swift's acting. Every time she came on screen I actually wanted to inflict pain upon myself, just so I wouldn't have to watch. Even thinking of it now makes me want to punch something, and believe me, I am not a violent person.

Note - I should probably mention that I didn't dislike everything about the film - I did like Jessica Biel's character, and I always like Anne Hathaway. That girl is beautiful.

Saw the movie Bronson. The soundtrack was definitely my favourite aspect of it, I think it really made the movie. It featured mainly grand, soaring classical music, but my favourite scene was when the drugged-up patients in an Insane Hospital dance to the 80's disco tune 'It's A Sin'.

A couple odd disposable shots from Melbourne.

Sometime in the future I will beg/borrow/steal a high quality scanner, re-scan all the analogue photos I have put up on this blog and re-upload them. Who am I kidding, I will never do that. Still, a well-intentioned thought.

I watched Tropfest live this year for the first time. It was so enjoyable, I love seeing how different the entries are. It's also so nice being part of a crowd at such events, people laughing together and being friendly.

The second prize winner, 'My Neighbourhood Has Been Overrun By Baboons', was probably my least favourite film of the night. That or the indicatively titled 'Testicle' - low-brow humour really is not my thing. My personal faves were 'Falling Backwards' (not an original concept, it's been done before, but it was executed so well and I really liked it), 'Fishlips' (quirky and funny) and 'No Dice Hollywood' (I was hoping this entry would win).

The 2006 film Volver.
I think Penélope Cruz is an amazing actress, she portrays Spanish passion so well. I can completely understand why she is Pedro Almodóvar's muse. There is something so... electric about her, so captivating. I wish I could meet her.
One thing I did notice whilst watching this film, was that the english subtitles weren't done extremely well. It's so exciting to be able to understand some of the dialogue, but at the same time so sad that certain Spanish expressions just do not translate into the
(I think, far less passionate) language of English.

I took a disposable to Woodford, but it broke and I was sad. Got it developed just in case, and by a small miracle these two photos turned out. Mr Perceival + Lisa Mitchell.

Disposable photos from the Muscles DJ set.
A night of firsts. First 18+ gig, first time going out with Jess, first time doing tequila shots,
first time meeting a stripper (that I know of anyway), first time buying a Kodak disposable camera (normally I just use cheap ones from the Reject Shop - turns out even though they are a fifth of the Kodak price, they are much better), first time at the Empire Hotel, and first (and I really hope the last) time going to the $1 Peep Show. It was so dirty and seedy, if it wasn't for my obsession with feeling like my life is a movie, I would have hated it.

I watched West Side Story for the first time. I'm not really a person who likes Musicals (excluding Chicago). I haven't seen many to base this on, but normally I find their unrealistic and cliché-ridden storylines irritating. West Side Story wasn't an exception (I skipped through a couple of the classic songs, many musical theatre lovers would hate me for it). However, I liked the dancing, the Sharks and the New York streets backdrop. I would still prefer to watch Romeo and Juliet though.

On a different subject, I realise this is unintentionally becoming a 'movies I have seen' blog. Probably a little boring for anyone looking at it but, sorry, I don't blog for you. I'm not even sure people read this, I feel like I might be the character who got lost and is standing in a desert talking to absolutely no one. If you're in the desert too though, hi.

A very heavy movie. I'm not too good with graphic violence, and this film has a lot so at times I was feeling quite sick.
Scarily good acting, and a really interesting insight into Maori culture.

I'm a fence sitter on the issue of Valentine's Day. I’m not one of the people who each year creates the perfect outfit with touches of pink/red and has romantic rendezvous on ferris wheels, but neither am I one of the anti-Hallmark brigade and I don’t sit at home with my cat, eating take-out and icecream out of the tub, watching The Notebook and crying.

Okay so I did watch that movie on Valentine’s Day last year. And take-out and icecream were involved. And okay fine I admit there was a feline animal present. But I wasn’t alone, and there was no crying, I swear. Sorry Rachel McAdams, but I permanently associate you with Regina George. And anyone who pronounces bitch “bee-yatch” just doesn’t have the ability to make me shed tears. You understand.

But anyway. Valentines Day. I hate the colour pink. Overt PDA’s do sometimes make me want to throw my mobile phone at the culprits. If I wanted to see that I would watch a movie with a nicely filmed sex scene. At least then I would get good angles and the actors are usually attractive. Just saying.

Valentines Day does have its redeeming aspects though. Handmade cards from admirers are cute. I’ve only ever received ones from creepy guys, but they were still thoughtful… right? Roses and picnics have my seal of approval. Spending time with a special someone is always nice. But just FYI, if I receive chocolates, I will probably feed them to my brothers.

Happy (belated) Valentine's Day.
